Because of the muscles! That's why. 25V opens up completely new possibilities and creates an unusually wide dynamic range, more headroom and more output. You'll really feel it when you strike the strings.
The response is super reactive, and the overall feel of the pedal is very different from typical overdrives. It just feels more powerful.
The EQ section of the pedal is a little bit different than many other pedals. The controls are basically like a vintage Fender™ amp (although the pedal doesn't sound like a Fender in any way). Among other things, this means that the controls are interactive in relation to each other. An example would be that turning down the treble not only lowers the higher frequencies but also raises the low frequencies a bit. This type of interaction opens up an almost endless range of sound possibilities by adjusting the bass, midrange and treble, as opposed to a simple high-pass, low-pass control. This is one of the things that makes the Two Five pedal unique.
The Voice Switch lets you configure the clipping section of the pedal in two different ways:
When the Voice Switch is turned down, two mosfet transistors are used as diodes and a germanium diode is used to produce super-rich, saturated gain (much like a Marshall™).
When the switch is turned up, two LEDs are used for clipping. These LEDs have a much wider dynamic range and give a more open, slightly cleaner sound (much like a Fender™).
After many hours of testing and comparing, we finally agreed on a JRC3404 as an op amp. It is a distant relative of the famous JRC4558, which some people covet for its use in the pedals of Vintage Tube Screamer™. This op amp is hard enough to withstand 25V, but still has a warm tone to keep things nice and sweet.
The Two Five Drive has decent output. So be careful with it! You can drive your tube amp incredibly hard with it if necessary, which is great for getting it into a natural overload.
